Tyler Bergquist, Grade 2
Second grader, Tyler Bergquist, is a true difference maker! He created a special way to take care of children and adults in the Colchester Community. Inspired by the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Tyler wrote a grant from Youth Service America and the Walt Disney Company to help both Colchester Elementary School (CES) and the community. Tyler credits CES Library Media Specialist, Maureen Schlosser and his mom for their guidance and support throughout this project. When someone in Colchester has a need, they will be able to fill out a leaf and add it to the tree. Tyler will work with the CES Social Worker, Colchester Social Services, Colchester Food Bank, and others to help him find the various needs in our community. Tyler shared, “I hope this will help people in need in Colchester.” Tyler selected a team of second graders to help design, build, publicize and support this important project. He explained,
“We used sonnet tubes, a wooden platform, a golf umbrella, flooring tape, paint, and a lot of felt.” The tree will stand in the CES foyer all year and donations can be made at any time. Items will change from week to week depending on what the community needs. His goal is to expand this project to other Colchester schools. If you would like to donate to the Giving Tree, it is located at the Colchester Elementary School, 315 Halls Hill Road, Colchester.
