Update On Superintendent Search Process
At its meeting Tuesday, the Colchester Board of Education provided an update to the community on the search for Colchester’s new permanent educational leader, and announced its choice for an interim leader following the departure of Karen Goodwin, Colchester’s current Interim Superintendent of Schools.
Ronald Goldstein, Chair of the Board, explained that the Personnel Search Committee of the Board decided to hold off, “for now,” on conducting interviews with candidates for the permanent position. ”The Committee did this for several reasons, he explained. “We have elections upcoming in November, with 4 of the Board’s 7 seats being filled, and with so much still unknown about the state budget and its impact, to interview and start someone new in this environment would be difficult. We are fortunate to have Interim Superintendent Goodwin through the end of December.” The Committee will continue to accept resumes later in the Fall and will likely conduct interviews in late Fall or early winter.
Realizing the new Superintendent would not be in place by the time of Interim Superintendent Goodwin’s departure, the Personnel Search Committee then decided to look for an Interim Superintendent to start on or about January 1, 2018. The Committee learned that Dr. Mary Conway, a long-time Superintendent in both Plainfield (10 years) and Vernon (5 years), and most-recently the Interim Superintendent of Brooklyn, was available. “Dr. Conway came highly recommended, and Karen (Goodwin) worked with Dr. Conway for 5 years when both were members of the Connecticut Center for School Change - Harvard University Superintendent's Network. Members of the Committee met with Dr. Conway twice and recommended her appointment to the Board of Education. The Board considered her appointment at its Tuesday meeting and unanimously appointed Dr. Conway, effective January 1, 2018.
“We (the Search Committee) were very impressed with Dr. Conway’s experience and obvious expertise,” Goldstein commented. “We discussed specifically with her our focus on Innovation Nation and our District-wide emphasis on personalized learning, We are confident that she will provide effective leadership as we continue our search for our permanent leader.”
