Colchester Public Schools provide students with high quality curricula in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, stimulating learning experiences in health and physical education, and a variety of options in world languages, art, music, technology education, family consumer sciences, and business. The purpose of a curriculum guide is to set the standards for student learning and define the skills, knowledge and understandings we believe all students need in order to become educated citizens.
Our district's mission statement reveals the emphasis we place on meeting the needs of every learner. Each year our teachers examine ways to help all students access the course content, and all teachers dedicate themselves to learning and growing in their profession through carefully designed professional development opportunities.
The Colchester Parent Curriculum Guides provide parents with a clear understanding of the "essential curriculum": what teachers expect students to know and be able to do by the end of each year in school. The interdisciplinary technology skills curriculum supports the content, knowledge and skills that students need to be successful in the 21st Century .
Our differentiation of instruction at all levels includes enrichment classes at the intermediate and middle schools so that the learning needs of our most talented students can be met. Students at Bacon Academy also have opportunities to receive college credit by participating in Advanced Placement, UCONN credit, and Three Rivers partnership courses; many other co-curricular activities serve to enhance their learning experiences as they make their educational journey in Colchester.
Sincerely,
Barbara Gilbert, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Staff Development
