C3 (Collaborative for Colchester's Children)
Colchester has been a recipient of the State Department of Education School Readiness Grant since 2005. The School Readiness Grant allows children, ages 3 and 4, from families below State Median Income to have a high quality preschool experience. Colchester is currently reapplying for the School Readiness Grant for the fiscal year 2014. Currently, the School Readiness spaces are located at CASTLE, Colchester Early Childhood Program, and Curley’s Kids Care.

The Bookmobile is Traveling Through Colchester
The Colchester Bookmobile will be traveling through town every first Saturday of each month, beginning at 10:00 am at Balaban Rd (apartment playscape), then to Tavern Lane (10:30 am), and Country Place (11:15 am). The bookmobile offers all residents many services, including book check-outs, book returns, issues library cards, and opportunities to obtain information on available Early Head Start services. If you are interested in volunteering time or donating books, please contact Evamarie Young at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Colchester Bookmobile has been made possible through a partnership between C3, Colchester Rotary Club, Cragin Memorial Library, Backus Hospital and the Town of Colchester.
Bacon Academy Students Design Early Literacy & Bookmobile Logos
C3 is pleased to announce that two Bacon Academy graphic arts students have been selected for their design creations. When we determined a need for an Early Literacy logo, as well as one for the recently launched Colchester Bookmobile, it seemed only logical to propose the idea to Bacon Academy Graphic Arts teacher, Jo-Ann Campbell, and her talented students. This opportunity provided the artists the unique experience to create an authentic product that will be used outside of the classroom. The students, from multiple graphic arts classes, showed great enthusiasm and each created individual logos. While it was difficult to choose only one from the many creative and professional designs, C3 ultimately chose junior Mikaela Stella for her Early Literacy design and senior Alicia Szostak for her Bookmobile design. Look for both original logos around Colchester soon! Please click here for photos.
Family Fun Day Health & Wellness Fair
C3 (The Collaborative for Colchester’s Children) held their 3rd Annual Family Fun Day Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, May 4th, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Colchester Recreation Complex. This was a free outdoor event for families featuring children’s activities, family resources, child ID cards, information booths, and much more! This was an opportunity for the whole family to participate in a variety of activities while obtaining information about healthy habits and the many resources available to live a better life. Backus Hospital Donates Car to C3 for Bookmobile
The Collaborative for Colchester’s Children (C3) is pleased to announce that partner, Backus Hospital, has generously donated a Subaru for use as the Bookmobile. The Bookmobile is, in essence, a vehicle that provides traveling library services to children in identified neighborhoods. The Bookmobile will be delivering books to elderly home-bound individuals, as well. The Colchester Bookmobile has been made possible through a partnership between Colchester Rotary Club, Cragin Memorial Library, and C3. As well, the Town of Colchester, another C3 partner, has agreed to take ownership of the Subaru, and insure and maintain it, as indicated by First Selectman, Gregg Schuster. The Rotary Club of Colchester took the lead on an early literacy initiative and provided initial funding for a traveling Bookmobile, Book It Kits, and a Reading Extravaganza library event, along with Cragin Memorial Library, to Colchester neighborhoods back in 2011. Realizing the importance of such a service, partner organizations worked together to bring the Bookmobile back, scheduled to begin in February, 2013. “I want to thank Backus Hospital for this generous donation. This vehicle will help C3 promote learning throughout the community,” affirmed Gregg Schuster. Having amazing partners working with C3 has created opportunities that would not otherwise exist for the citizens of Colchester. We work together in partnership to provide services and support to children from birth to age eight and their families. We want all of Colchester’s children to be healthy, happy, and successful! Whether you would like to become an active member of C3 or volunteer at one of the many activities, there is a place for you! For more information, please contact Cindy Praisner, Early Childhood Coordinator at 860.537.0717 or email@example.com.
Early Literacy Grant
C3’s strong working relationship with the Colchester Public Schools enabled the two groups to quickly come together for a new grant opportunity. In mid-June a panel of twelve, consisting of school staff, the Board of Education Chair, and C3 members took part in an interview to present a comprehensive and collaborative plan for meeting early literacy needs in Colchester. In August, we were notified that Colchester was one of six districts in Connecticut selected to receive $50,000 for its Early Literacy Partnership! The funds are being awarded by the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, The Children’s Fund of Connecticut, & the CT Department of Education. Click here for more information.
C3 is grant funded by the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, The Children’s Trust Fund of Connecticut, and the State Department of Education.
