Hot School Summer Institute 2016: Storytelling, An Artful Journey
JACK JACKTER INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
IS PROUD TO BE A HOT SCHOOL!
The Higher-Order Thinking (HOT) Schools Program is currently one of 16 Connecticut schools to promote teaching and learning, in, about and through the arts in a democratic setting. The program builds “HOT” skills in students through three core components: Strong Arts, Arts Integration, and Democratic Practice. Classroom teachers, specialists and visiting artists work collaboratively to structure interdisciplinary curricula that promotes deep learning of subject matter, higher-order thinking, creativity, adaptability and teamwork. The HOT approach considers the whole child, teacher, artist, administrator, and larger school community (parents and stakeholders). The HOT School components are clearly reflected in our school’s mission statement:
JJIS is a safe, respectful, learning community. Educators, parents, and students collaborate to ensure each child’s well-being, continuous growth and educational excellence. We address the needs of the whole child through the use of an arts infused, academic curriculum, multiple intelligences and the celebration of student voice. Student success is reflected by performance standards and authentic work. Together, we provide responsive, comprehensive support systems to ensure each and every child succeeds and thrives.
The HOT School Network continues to build and share work that is occurring throughout Connecticut in the various HOT schools. They do this by compiling information submitted into an informative newsletter, which we included our digital backpack last week.
Their newsletters are always “reader friendly” and we are proud that JJIS parent, Meghan Wildstein’s letter entitled, “HOT is the Way”, was included in their most recent publication. Meghan will be recognized for her contribution and support of JJIS at the upcoming Colchester Board of Education meeting. We hope you enjoy reading these inspiring articles.
We are also pleased to announce that Bonnie Koba, Director for HOT Schools, has chosen Meghan’s article "HOT is the Way", to be featured on the DECD Office of Culture and Tourism HOT Schools page. The article appears beneath "Parent Partners" in support of parent involvement in Higher Order Thinking Schools. http://www.ct.gov/cct/cwp/view.asp?a=3933&q=293712
