Jeffrey Burt, Superintendent of the Colchester Public Schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Rebecca Lopes as the next Assistant Director of Pupil Services and Special Education for the Colchester Public Schools.
“I am so very pleased that Mrs. Lopes will be joining the administrative team. It is difficult to find qualified special education administrators and Mrs. Lopes is very qualified. She and Director Perry will make an outstanding team and I know they will continue to provide outstanding programming for all of our students,” said Superintendent Jeffrey Burt.
Rebecca has been an educator for more about 15 years and brings a variety of experiences to Colchester. She began working in schools as a paraprofessional in North Attleboro in Massachusetts. She then started her teaching career in special education in 2004 in Avon Public Schools, Massachusetts. For two years she worked as a special education teacher with students at the elementary level, including acting as the Director of Summer School for Special Education. She then moved to Connecticut to Plainfield Public Schools as the Special Education Resource Case Manager for ten years. In addition to acting as the district case manager, she worked with classroom teachers on improving reading instruction as well as Wilson Reading Program training. Two years ago Mrs. Lopes moved into an administrative position in Southbridge, Massachusetts as an Assistant Supervisor of Special Education. In this role she had a number of responsibilities, including supervision of staff, chairing Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings, working with local services, overseeing the English Language Learners program, and building relationships with families. Southbridge Public Schools is currently under control of the state and Mrs. Lopes was tasked with ensuring that the middle school special education services complied with state regulations, which she was able to accomplish within one year by collaborating with her middle school colleagues.
Mrs. Lopes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Simmons College in Massachusetts, and a Masters of Education degree in Special Education and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State University.
Mrs. Lopes will start as Colchester Public Schools’ new Assistant Director of Pupil Services and Special Education on September 10th. Mrs. Lopes will replace Joshua Vinoski, who will be teaching in Colchester Public School’s alternative high school and resiliency programs.
