Diversity and Inclusion Program (DIP)
Purpose: To reflect upon and inform the Board of Education about student perspective in all of the Colchester Public Schools; as well as educate students about the importance of diversity to help instill an inclusive climate and environment throughout all of the schools. This program will help promote the awareness of different students’ backgrounds to the Board and the district as a whole. The vision is to ensure that our public schools are a safe, inclusive environment where all of our Colchester students feel valued and important.
What it is: Throughout the year, the Board of Education student members and student council will hold these Diversity and Inclusion meetings to gain input about student perspective in the Colchester public schools. Every month/every other month there will be a meeting where the focus will be put on a specific school; from that meeting information about the students’ views can be collected.
Student Reports: With the information collected from these Diversity and Inclusion Meetings, the student board representatives will be able to report to the Board of Education about student perspectives in all of our Colchester Public Schools. There will be quarterly reports coordinated to notify the board of what has been found, what solutions there may be, and how the program as whole is going. If something urgent comes up that the representatives and the council thinks the Board should address, the chairmen will need to be notified as soon as possible.
Leaders: The founder of this program is Jenaea Duddie (class of 2018). She had the idea of starting this program for all of the Colchester Public Schools in 2017. The heads of this program will be the Colchester Board of Education student members, since they will be the ones representing and reporting about student perspective at the Board of Education meetings. The leaders of this program are the Bacon Academy student council members as they will be working alongside the student board representatives to help run these Diversity and Inclusion meetings.
